A Higher Standard

In order to promote the use and development of renewable energy, many states have adopted Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS). An RPS is a statewide mandate that requires a certain percentage of electricity come from renewable sources such as wind and solar. Continued development of renewable resources is largely driven by the adoption of these standards. Viridian has pledged to exceed this standard by at least 20% in all of our electricity markets.

How does "green energy" work?

Green energy works through Renewable Energy Certificates or RECs. Each REC is proof that one megawatt-hour of electricity was generated from a renewable source. In addition to selling the physical electricity to the grid to power homes and businesses, a generator can also sell their RECs to suppliers like Viridian who must buy the certificates to meet mandatory and voluntary marketing standards. RECs create an additional revenue stream for generators, helping them offset upfront development costs and allowing them to sustain business among large-scale traditional generators like coal plants.

Viridian offers two different electricity products: 20% renewable Everyday Green and 100% wind-generated, Green-e Energy certified Pure Green. Customers can choose which affordable plan best fits their budget and their environmental preference.
