Connecticut
For the calendar year 2010, Connecticut policy mandates every licensed electricity supplier to obtain 14% of their electricity load from renewable sources, which is comprised of the following:
- 7% Class I Renewable Energy – this includes solar power, wind power and certain kinds of hydropower and sustainable biomass facilities.
- 3% Class II Renewable Energy – this includes trash-to-energy facilities and other qualifying biomass and hydropower facilities.
- 4% Class III Renewable Energy – this includes output from other clean heat to power sources.
Viridian exceeds this required 14% renewable mix by an extra 6% backed by Green-E certified Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) purchased in the voluntary market from Class I resources located in New England, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and/or Maryland.
All voluntary RECs purchased by Viridian are Green-e certified.
This voluntary 6% is comprised of renewables that are generated in the calendar year in which the product sold, the first three months of the following calendar year, or the last six months of the prior calendar year.
Viridian is in the process of developing a Green-E certified 100% renewable rate plan.
