What is deregulation and what has it changed?

Prior to the 1990s, every state in the US regulated its electric industry. There was only one company (the local utility) that was responsible for all components of your energy service.

Today, your energy service is divided into three components including generation, transmission and distribution. Under deregulation, your local utility still exclusively manages the transmission and distribution parts of this process, but generation has been opened to competition for suppliers, like Viridian Energy, to buy energy in the wholesale markets and then sell it to customers like you.

So what exactly is going to change and what will stay the same?

The part of your energy service that affects you the most (consumption) will stay the same. Your lights will still turn on and you won’t even notice the day that Viridian takes over as your provider. You will get a bill like you do every month, but it will have Viridian’s name on it in addition to your local utility. The utility will continue to provide repair, maintenance and emergency response.

Will I have to get a new meter or any new equipment?

No. You will not have to make any purchases or changes to the system you currently have. You will keep the meter you have always had and it will be read the same way and on the same cycle. No physical or logistical changes are required because we deliver electricity through the same transmission and distribution method owned and operated by your current utility.

Who do I call if I have problems with my service?

If you have any problems, you will contact the utility. They remain responsible for the delivery of your energy, as well as for any necessary maintenance and repairs.

If you live in the Connecticut Light & Power territory, please call 1-800-286-2000.

If you live in the United Illuminating territory, please call 1-800-722-5584.

For PPL, please call 1-800-DIAL-PPL

If I switch, will my reliability be affected?

No. Viridian and other retail suppliers just like us are just as reliable as the utility. All electricity providers, including Viridian, are monitored and licensed by the utility commission or responsible authority in your state.

How will I be billed?

The same way you always have been. You will continue to receive one bill each month with charges for your usage, and the same service and delivery charges. If you wish to change your current payment method you can do so through the utility.

How do I enroll?

Enrollment is simple and fast. You can do it online or over the phone. Viridian needs to know your basic contact information and your unique utility identification code which can be easily found on any of your bills.

How does Viridian reduce my monthly bills?

Deregulation allows electricity suppliers like Viridian to buy energy wholesale from competitive providers and pass the savings along to customers. Viridian also provides only one specialized service, eliminating the operational costs that often burden utilities.

Does it cost anything to enroll?

Enrollment is absolutely free. There are no contracts, sign-up fees or hidden fees anywhere in the process.

I am moving to a new apartment or home and want Viridian to my electricity provider but don’t have my UI or CL&P account number yet. How can I enroll?

In order to enroll, you must use an active and valid account number issued by the utility. You do not necessarily need a copy of your bill, but you must know this number, which you can find out by calling the utility before you even receive a bill.

If you are moving into a United Illuminating territory, ask the customer service respresentative for your POD number.

If you are moving into Connecticut Light and Power territory, ask the representative for your account number and service reference number.

If you are moving into PPL territory, ask the representative for your new 10 digit account number.

You must wait to enroll, however, until your account is active and the electricity has been turned on.

I am a current customer moving to a new apartment or home within my utility territory. Will I remain enrolled with Viridian as my electricity supplier?

If you are moving within your same territory, your Viridian service will move with you unless you explicity request that the utility discontinue your supplier service or switch to a different supplier.

What is a monthly variable rate and how is it different from a fixed rate?

A monthly variable rate means that our rate changes according to the price of electricity. A fixed rate means that you will pay the same rate for a fixed period of time, usually for one year or 6 months, no matter what the price of electricity is. Our variable rate is lower than the utility because the price of energy has gone down and we are able to pass along the savings to you.

I am a UI Customer and just received my bill, but my generation rate does not look like a Viridian rate.?

If Viridian’s rate changes in the middle of a UI Customer’s billing cycle, UI will reflect this as a blended average of the two rates. For example, if your billing cycle is 30 days long and the rate changes from 8 cents per kwh to 7 cents per kwh on day 15, then you will be billed at 8 cents for the first 15 days of your billing cycle and 7 cents for the second 15 days of your billing cycle. This will be reflected as a blended average of the two rates on your bill, or 7.5 cents per kwh in this example.
